On Trail Hygiene

1. Introduction

When hiking its really important to remain hygienic, you don't want to be ill! On longer trips you might still smell bad but no one will judge you for it!

2. Hand Hygiene

This is a very important point in avoiding illness. Make sure to alway use hand sanitizer before eating and try to wash your hands with soap at least once a day.

With hand sanitizer, make sure to find one that isn't sticky as it dries. You'll find you wont want to use it, and your hands will get dirty quickly.

3. Dental Hygiene

It might seem an easy point to skip but make sure to keep good dental hygiene. Tooth decay is irreversible, and poor dental Hygiene leads to increased risk of tooth ache. If you use them, make sure to continue to use retainers on longer trips. To make packing easier consider trimming down your tooth brush, the short handle is much easier to work with. Consider using dent tabs too, they save a small amount of weight and make sure that you have enough toothpaste. Don't forget to wash your hands before you brush!

4. Body Hygiene

While its not essential, maintaining some body hygiene helps boost your moral and we find it helps us to sleep better too.

One area to make sure stays clean is your feet, this will help to avoid blisters. If walking somewhere wet, try to get your feet dry at the end of a day to avoid trench foot.

When hiking in places where there isn't many swimming opportunities, consider using wipes. They are a great way to get the worst of the grime off without much wasted water.

Making sure to stay at least a little clean helps to avoid chafing.

5. Laundry

Again not essential but trying to keep clean clothes can boost moral and helps avoid chafing.

6. Soap

In many cases to effectively wash you'll need to use soap. Soap will damage wildlife so it's important to use it sparingly and far from any water source, at least 100ft/35 meters.
