Bow Fell and Esk Pike
A big day out on Bow Fell and Esk Pike, taking in the Climbers Traverse on the way up. The route covered 16.72 km with 1744.0 m of ascent, with cold conditions on the tops and a warmer finish down in the valley.
Quick Summary
We went up via the Climbers Traverse, which gave the day a more interesting line than a straightforward ascent. Higher up it felt properly cold, but by the time we were back at the valley bottom it was warm enough for a swim.
Day 1
The Climbers Traverse was the standout part of the route and set the tone early on. It added a bit more character to the climb and made the approach to Bow Fell feel more engaging than just grinding straight uphill.
Up high, the temperature dropped and it felt exposed on the tops. That contrast really stayed with me, because the day finished in completely different conditions lower down. Back in the valley, it was warm enough to get in the water, which felt like a good way to round things off after a long climb.
Highlights and Learnings
- The Climbers Traverse was the most memorable part of the ascent.
- The tops were noticeably cold, so extra layers were worth having to hand.
- The change in temperature through the day was striking, from cold summits to a warm valley finish.
- A swim at the end was a great reset after being out on the hill.
