Overnight at Refuge de Bastan
Our overnight to Refuge de Bastan felt like a real step beyond a standard day hike. We covered 32.96 km with 5226.6 m of ascent, and the first mountain hut stay was the part that made the trip stand out.
Quick Summary
Breaking the route across two days changed the whole feel of it. Reaching the refuge, staying the night, and heading back the next day made the outing feel more immersive and more memorable than a single long push.
Day 1
We set out with that mix of curiosity and excitement that comes with trying something new. Because it was our first mountain hut overnight, there was a bit more anticipation in the day from the start.
What stayed with me most was the sense of arrival at Refuge de Bastan. Getting there felt like a genuine milestone rather than just the midpoint of the route. Once we arrived, the pace shifted in a good way. Instead of turning straight around, we got to settle in and enjoy being there.
Day 2
By the second day, the overnight format already felt like the main lesson of the trip. Splitting the hike with a night in the hut gave the whole route a more relaxed rhythm and made the time in the mountains feel fuller.
By the end, it was obvious we wanted to do more trips like this. It felt like a proper introduction to mountain hut stays and opened up plenty of ideas for future overnighters.
