Ribblehead, Dent and Ireby Dales Walk
A three-day Dales walk linked an after-work start from Ribblehead, a wild camp, and two notably quiet days on foot through Dent and on to Ireby. Across the full outing we covered 68.66 km with 2007.6 m of ascent.
Quick Summary
This was a weekend made up of three linked walks: Ribblehead Station to a wild camp on Friday evening, a long day from camp to Dent on Saturday, and a final leg from Dent to Ireby on Sunday.
What stayed with me most was the lack of people. Saturday felt strikingly empty, with only about four other walkers seen all day, and on Sunday we saw just one other person on the route.
Day 1
We started after work from Ribblehead Station and walked in to camp. It was a short opening leg, but it changed the feel of the whole weekend by getting us out that same evening rather than waiting for a full start the next morning.
The walk in ended with a beautiful sunset, which gave the first night a clear sense of arrival. It was a simple way to settle into the trip without any rush.
Day 2
The second day was the biggest one of the trip, heading from the wild camp to Dent. More than anything, it was defined by how quiet the Dales felt.
We spent the day moving through open country with very little interruption, and that sense of space gave the route its character. It felt less like a walk built around landmarks and more like a full day spent properly out in the landscape.
Only about four other walkers appeared all day, which is rare enough to shape the whole memory of it.
Day 3
On the final day we left Dent and carried on to Ireby. The same calm feeling carried through to the end, with only one other person seen on the route all day.
That made for a strong finish. After the longer middle day, this last leg felt steadier and more settled, and it rounded off the weekend in the same quiet mood it had built from the start.
Highlights and Learnings
The biggest highlight was the sense of quiet from start to finish. Two days in a row with so few people around gave the whole trip a different feel.
A few things stood out afterwards:
- starting after work made the weekend feel longer
- the wild camp gave the route a clear shape
- easing in on Friday helped the longer middle day feel more manageable
- a simple backpacking setup made sense for linking an evening walk-in with two full days on foot
- quieter lines can stay with me more than busier, better-known routes
It was a simple three-day outing, but a very satisfying one: sunset on the first evening, a long empty day through the Dales, and a calm final walk out to Ireby.
