Torver to Beacon Tarn via the Long Way

Download GPX

A two-day overnighter linking a big first-day circuit from Torver with a short walk back from Beacon Tarn the next morning. Across both days, the route covered 36.64 km with 2777.2 m of ascent.

Quick Summary

We started from Torver, stretched the approach into a full day out through the Coniston and Dunnerdale Fells, then kept the second morning deliberately simple with a short walk back and breakfast at the end.

Day 1

We set off from Torver and chose the long way to Beacon Tarn, turning the approach into the main event rather than just a means of getting to camp. With fine weather and plenty of time, it felt easy to keep going, linger where it made sense, and let the day grow into something bigger than the direct line.

What stood out most was the rhythm of the day. We had three swims along the way, which changed the feel of it completely. Even with the scale of the route, the stops kept things relaxed and made the whole day feel less like a push and more like making the most of a warm spell in the fells. By the time we reached Beacon Tarn, it felt like we had used the day well.

Day 2

The second day was simpler by design. We took the short way back to Torver, kept the morning straightforward, and let the first day remain the main effort of the trip.

That easy walk out set up a very tasty breakfast, which felt like exactly the right finish. After a big first day, there was no need to force more into the second morning.

Highlights and Learnings

  • Taking the longer line to Beacon Tarn was worth it in fine weather.
  • The three swims gave the first day a more relaxed pace and made it more memorable.
  • A big first day paired well with an easy exit the next morning.
  • Keeping the second morning simple was the right call after the longer circuit.
