Birks Fell Overnighter via Littondale

A two-day overnighter in Littondale, with a short evening walk into camp and a longer return the next morning. Across both days, the route came to 26.62 km with 639.0 m of ascent.

Quick Summary

We kept the first day intentionally brief so we could reach camp with time to spare, get settled, and enjoy the evening. The second day took the longer way back through Littondale, which gave the trip a better shape than simply walking in and retracing our steps.

Day 1

The walk in was straightforward, but it still had that familiar change in mood that comes once the car is behind us and the overnight has properly started. With camp kit on our backs, we settled into a steady pace from the outset.

Arriving with time in hand made the evening feel much more relaxed. Camp was not just a stop before dark; we had space to sort ourselves out and actually enjoy being there.

Dinner was one of the clear highlights: shepherd’s pie followed by apple crumble. Even after a short walk, that felt very well earned.

Day 2

The return was the bigger day of the trip. Instead of heading straight back, we took the long way out and turned the morning into a proper walk in its own right.

That choice gave the overnighter a better rhythm. The first day had a clear purpose, but the second had more room to wander, look around, and enjoy the spring feel in Littondale. It made the whole outing feel more like a small journey than a simple camp and walk back.

Highlights and Learnings

A few things stood out from this one:

  • Keeping the first day short worked well for an overnight.
  • Carrying camp kit naturally slowed the pace, but in a good way.
  • A decent meal at camp lifted the whole evening.
  • Leaving room for a longer, more exploratory return made the trip feel more balanced.

What I liked most was how well the two days complemented each other. One was about arriving, settling in, and enjoying camp. The other was about stretching the legs and making the walk back feel worthwhile in its own right.
