Why Hike It
The Malerweg ("Painter's Way") earns its name. Caspar David Friedrich and other German Romantic masters stood on these sandstone formations in the 1800s and rendered them into paintings that still define the genre. The 112-km loop through Saxon Switzerland National Park, perched along the Elbe River near the Czech border, remains one of Germany's most visually concentrated long-distance trails — gorges, table mountains, river terraces, and medieval ruins condensed into a week of walking. It is also manageable: a loop starting and finishing in Pirna, well-signed throughout, with frequent guesthouse accommodation meaning no tent is required unless you want one.

Highlights and Signature Sections
The Bastei area — an extraordinary clutch of rocky spires 194 m above the Elbe — is the iconic scene, but the Malerweg routes it into a logical arc rather than a tourist detour. Neurathen Castle ruins sit atop one formation; the Bastei Bridge connects towers that look computer-generated until you're standing on them. The Kirnitzschtal valley section features waterfalls and a surviving historic tramway. The eastern leg crosses into wild sandstone labyrinth terrain around Hinterhermsdorf where the trail feels properly remote despite being in one of Germany's busiest national parks. Watch for sand martin colonies nesting in sandstone walls and kingfishers along the Kirnitzsch.
Season Window
Best: April–June and September–October. Spring brings blossom and green against golden sandstone. Autumn colour in the mixed beech and pine forest is exceptional. Summer weekends near Bastei are crowded; start early or book accommodation mid-week. Winter is possible and atmospheric but some guesthouses close.
Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep
The Malerweg passes through or near villages every day, so resupply is easy and accommodation is abundant. No wild camping is permitted within the national park. All towns have restaurants and small shops. Pirna and Bad Schandau are the main trail hubs with full services. The trail is divided into eight official stages, though most hikers merge some shorter stages.
Permits and Rules
No permit required. Saxon Switzerland National Park is free to enter. Wild camping is prohibited throughout the park — guesthouses and hotels handle all accommodation. A small number of bivouac sites exist outside the national park boundary; check current rules with the national park authority.
Gear Watch
The Malerweg is well-maintained but includes technical sections with steep ladders and chains fixed to sandstone walls. Grippy trail shoes are essential — sandstone is extremely slippery when wet. Poles help but are awkward on the ladder sections. A daypack approach (luggage transfer available) is viable but misses the full thru-hike experience.
Hazards and Cautions
Sandstone is fragile and subject to rockfall — stay on marked paths and do not climb unmarked formations. The fixed ladder and chain sections are exciting but require good upper body strength and a head for exposure. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer; exposed formations are dangerous in lightning. The Elbe valley is prone to flooding — check conditions if visiting in spring or after sustained rain.
First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy
Walk clockwise ("Weg A" in the official signage) to hit the Bastei on day two when legs are fresh. Book accommodation for Bastei-adjacent nights (Rathen village or Kurort Rathen) at least two weeks in advance in summer — these fill fast. The full 8-stage itinerary is comfortable; compress to 6 days if you're fit and want a challenge.
