Grasmere to Keswick via High Raise and Chapel House Farm, 9–10 August 2025

A two-day walk from Grasmere to Keswick, split by an overnight at Chapel House Farm Campsite. It was a trip of quick weather changes, a comfortable camp, and two well-timed swims that broke up the miles nicely.

Quick Summary

We walked from Grasmere to Keswick over two days, stopping overnight at Chapel House Farm Campsite on 9–10 August 2025. Across the combined route, the total came to 34.83 km with 3289.2 m of ascent.

What We Got Up To

We set off from Grasmere and headed over High Raise toward Chapel House Farm Campsite. The first day had that familiar Lakeland mix of moods: wet and windy on the tops, then much brighter later on when the sun finally came through. That shift changed the feel of the day completely, and we made the most of it with a swim before carrying on to camp.

Stopping at Chapel House Farm Campsite gave the route a good natural break. Instead of forcing the whole crossing into one long push, we could stop, reset, and enjoy the evening before carrying on the next morning.

Day two started well. We’d had a comfy night on the new air mat, packed up without much fuss, and set off toward Keswick. There was another dip before the sun came over the hills, which felt like a pretty good way to begin the day. After that, it was a matter of settling into the walk and following the route through to Keswick.

Conditions and Gear

The main thing we noticed was how quickly the conditions changed. High Raise was wet and windy, and that first stretch needed a bit of patience. Later brighter spells made everything feel lighter and easier.

The overnight kit earned its place too. The new air mat made for a solid night, and that made a real difference on a two-day trip.

Highlights and Learnings

A few things stood out:

  • getting through the wet and windy section over High Raise and then seeing the day improve
  • splitting the route with a night at Chapel House Farm Campsite
  • fitting in a swim once the weather cleared on day one
  • starting day two after a comfortable night on the new air mat
  • another early dip before the sun reached the hills on the way to Keswick

The main lesson was a simple one: a day can turn around quickly. What began in rough conditions ended up feeling relaxed and enjoyable once the weather eased and camp was sorted.

Photos

The photos from both days tell that story well, from the greyer feel on the way out of Grasmere to the calmer camp and the brighter morning as we carried on toward Keswick.
