Torver to Beacon Tarn Overnighter via the Long Way Round, 17–18 May 2025

A two-day overnighter linking a big first-day circuit from Torver with a short walk back out from Beacon Tarn the next morning. Across both days, the route covered 36.64 km with 2777.2 m of ascent.

Quick Summary

We used the good weather to turn a simple overnight into a much bigger day out through the Coniston and Dunnerdale Fells, then kept the second morning easy with a short walk back to Torver and a well-earned breakfast. The contrast between the long, swim-filled approach and the quick exit made it feel like a full little trip rather than just two separate activities.

What We Got Up To

This was really one outing split across two days. On 17 May, we set off from Torver and took the long way to Beacon Tarn, making the most of the fine weather with a full day in the Coniston and Dunnerdale Fells. It was the kind of day that invited us to stay out longer, linger at good spots, and stretch the route into something more memorable than the direct option.

The standout detail from the first day was the three swims on the way. That gave the walk a relaxed rhythm despite the scale of it: moving steadily, stopping when it felt worth it, and enjoying the warm spell while it lasted. By the time we reached Beacon Tarn, it felt like we had properly used the day.

The second day, 18 May, was much simpler by design. We took the short way back to Torver, keeping things straightforward after the bigger effort the day before. It was a short walk out, followed by a very tasty breakfast, which felt like exactly the right way to finish the trip.

Conditions and Gear

The weather was clearly the thing that shaped the outing. The first day only made sense in the way it did because conditions were good enough to encourage the longer line and the swim stops. That settled weather gave us time to enjoy where we were rather than just focus on getting from one point to the next.

For an overnighter like this, the main benefit was keeping the second morning uncomplicated. After a long first day, having a short exit worked well and stopped the trip from feeling overstuffed.

Highlights and Learnings

A few things stood out from this one:

  • Taking the longer option was worth it when the weather was on our side.
  • The swims changed the feel of the day and made it more relaxed and memorable.
  • Splitting the trip into a big approach and an easy exit gave it a nice balance.
  • Ending with breakfast in Torver was a strong final note.
