Pre-trip safety check for beginners

1. Why do a safety check?

Most hiking incidents are caused by small planning gaps, not dramatic mistakes. A short safety check before leaving helps you spot those gaps while you still have time to fix them.

2. Route and timing

Before you go, confirm:

  • Start point and finish point
  • Planned distance and ascent per day
  • Escape options if weather turns
  • Last realistic turnaround time

If your plan only works in perfect conditions, simplify it.

3. Weather and conditions

Check the local mountain forecast, not just a city app.

Look for:

  • Rain and wind strength
  • Overnight temperature
  • Thunderstorm risk
  • Recent trail reports

If forecast risk is high, choose a lower and shorter route.

4. Gear essentials check

Do a quick function test on key items:

  • Waterproof jacket and insulation layer
  • Headtorch and spare battery
  • Navigation tools and downloaded offline maps
  • Water treatment method
  • Basic first aid and personal medication

If one essential item is missing, delay the trip and fix it.

5. Leave a simple trip plan

Share this with one trusted contact:

  • Route name and map link
  • Where you are parking or starting
  • Planned finish date and time
  • When to call for help if you do not check in

This is one of the easiest and most valuable safety habits.

6. Morning-of final check

Before setting off, ask:

  • Do I have enough water for the first section?
  • Can I confidently navigate in poor visibility?
  • Do I have enough layers for expected temperatures?
  • Do I know my first bailout point?

If the answer to any is no, adjust the plan immediately.
