Prapic to Dormillouse Overnight Loop

A two-day hike from Prapic to Dormillouse and back linked a remote village, big passes, repeated river crossings, and a lot of lingering snow. Across both days, the route covered 45.33 km with 2543.3 m of ascent.

Quick Summary

We walked in from Prapic to Dormillouse on day one via Lac des Pisses and Col du Freissinières, then returned to Prapic on day two via Col de Terres Blanches. It felt like a proper mountain overnighter: long days, varied terrain, and enough snow on both passes to keep us paying attention.

Day 1

The first day was the more committing of the two. We left Prapic and headed for Dormillouse by way of Lac des Pisses and Col du Freissinières, with plenty of river crossings along the way and one pass that felt genuinely sketchy because of the amount of snow still hanging around.

That combination made the day feel slower and more serious than the map alone might suggest. The crossings kept breaking the rhythm, and the snowy ground on the pass demanded a bit more care and patience before we could relax into the descent toward Dormillouse.

Day 2

The return to Prapic went by Col de Terres Blanches. It was a less intimidating day overall, but there was still loads of snow over the pass, so it never felt completely straightforward.

Even so, the mood was different from day one. Once we were over the main high point, it felt more like a long way home than a problem to solve, and the line back toward Prapic came with a bit more confidence after the previous day's trickier ground.

Highlights and Learnings

A few things stood out from the trip:

  • Dormillouse made a great overnight objective and gave the two days a clear shape.
  • The river crossings were a bigger part of the experience than I expected and kept the route feeling lively.
  • Snow on the passes changed the character of both days, especially on the approach to Col du Freissinières.
  • Day two was still demanding, just in a calmer way than the first day.

The main lesson was not to underestimate how much lingering snow can slow a route down and raise the stakes, even in mid-July. This was one of those trips where steady decisions mattered more than quick progress.
