Why Hike It
Stara Planina is Serbia's wild border spine: broad ridges, weather-beaten plateaus, and deep green basins where villages feel nearly unchanged for decades. This route is less visited than major Balkan classics, so hikers get space, silence, and a raw mountain atmosphere. The terrain is varied without being technical mountaineering, making it a strong next step for hikers who want bigger days and real remoteness.

Highlights and Signature Sections
The Midzor high ridge zone (day 2-3) gives the biggest views over both Serbia and Bulgaria. Tupavica waterfall detour offers a dramatic break from ridge walking. Late-stage grassland crests near Babin Zub feel expansive and quiet, with frequent shepherd encounters.
Season Window
June-September. Snow lingers into early summer on shaded slopes. July and August are most stable; September provides cooler hiking and fewer storms.
Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep
Most itineraries start near Pirot and finish near Knjazevac-side trailheads. Food resupply is limited; carry 2-3 days of food between villages. Springs are frequent but seasonal reliability varies late in summer. Combine huts, village stays, and selective wild camps.
Permits and Rules
No permit required for normal hiking routes. Border-adjacent sections require attention to signage; remain on marked trails and carry ID.
Gear Watch
Sturdy shoes with good grip are recommended. Windproof shell and warm layer are important even in midsummer. Offline navigation is essential due to patchy signal.
Hazards and Cautions
Thunderstorms can build fast over open ridges. Dogs guarding livestock may approach aggressively; keep distance from flocks and avoid sudden movement. Some water sources dry late season.
First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy
Plan conservative mileages for the first two days while adjusting to exposure and long ridge sections. Use village overnights where possible to reduce pack weight. Treat weather as the primary schedule driver, not distance targets.
