Mossdale Overnight Loop
A two-day Mossdale overnighter made the most of a spell of good weather, with an after-work walk in, a cold frosty night, and a longer return the next day. Across both days, the route covered 23.27 km with 780.8 m of ascent.
Quick Summary
We headed out after work for a simple wild camp in Mossdale, had dinner at a shooting hut, and gave the new tent its first proper outing. The second day started with frost, then turned into a brighter, easier-feeling walk out with welcome stops in Hebden for coffee and Grassington for ice cream.
Day 1
The first evening was all about getting out quickly and making the most of the light. It was a short walk in, but it still had that nice shift from ordinary day to overnight trip once we were properly away from the road.
The weather was kind, which made the whole thing feel straightforward from the start. We had dinner at a shooting hut before settling in for the night, and the main point of the trip was really to get that first night out in the new tent.
Day 2
The night itself was cold, and we woke to frost. Once the sun was up it warmed quickly, which changed the feel of the day completely and made the longer walk back feel much more relaxed.
The return leg had a bit more variety to it, with a coffee stop in Hebden and an ice cream in Grassington breaking things up nicely. After a cold start, those small comforts stood out just as much as the walking.
Highlights and Learnings
A few things stood out from this one:
- The new tent handled its first outing well.
- Cold overnight temperatures mattered more than the pleasant evening suggested.
- A short after-work walk in is a great way to stretch a trip across two days without needing loads of time.
- Coffee and ice cream stops can do a lot for morale on the way back.
It was a simple trip, but a good reminder that an overnight does not need to be complicated to feel worthwhile.
