Why Hike It
Prenj represents one of Europe's last true alpine wilderness experiences — a mountain range where trail markers are inconsistent, infrastructure is minimal, and the landscape rewards route-finding skill with profound solitude. The circuit combines vertical limestone cliffs, hidden alpine lakes, and steep scrambly sections that demand technical judgment. The cultural context includes the ongoing post-war reconciliation in the Neretva Valley communities below, making the hike a bridge between European recreation and Balkan history.

Highlights and Signature Sections
Prenj Peak (2,694 m) offers views across the Dinaric ranges into Albania and Montenegro. Jablan Lake (day 2) is the only alpine lake in the circuit, sitting at 2,200 m in a cirque. The Neretva River descent (day 4) is steep, rocky, and emotionally powerful as civilization returns. Konjic town (day 5) provides post-trek recovery and Bosnian recovery food.
Season Window
June–September. Winters are severe with snow persisting into June. July–August are optimal for trail conditions; June and September carry avalanche or icing risk and unreliable hut staffing.
Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep
Access from Konjic (UNESCO heritage copper-mining town, 2 hours from Sarajevo). Mountain huts operate June–September; wild camping is practical and culturally acceptable. Regional guesthouses in Neretva Valley provide town nights. Resupply from Konjic before departure and Neretva villages during descent.
Permits and Rules
No permits required. The range is managed for conservation — stay on marked trails. Respect shepherding flocks and seasonal grazing patterns.
Gear Watch
Trail runners insufficient — boots with ankle support required. Technical scramble experience recommended. Trekking poles essential for descent. Microspikes for June trips. Map and compass navigation critical — GPS coverage is unreliable in the karst.
Hazards and Cautions
Route-finding is non-obvious in several sections; the route-finding challenge is intentional and part of the experience. Loose scree is common on descents — move slowly and deliberately. Weather systems develop rapidly — afternoon thunderstorms are frequent in July–August. Rafting sections of the Neretva may be swollen in early June.
First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy
Hire a local guide for day 1–2. Most guides are based in Konjic and can meet you at the trailhead. They provide route-finding expertise, cultural context about the war-affected communities, and emergency contacts. After day 2 you can proceed independently if confident. The Jablan Lake area is a psychological apex — after summiting, the descent becomes a celebration.
