Why Hike It
The Premuzic Trail is Croatia's finest short multi-day route and one of the best-kept secrets in European hiking. Running for 57 km along the ridge of Northern Velebit National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the path was hand-built in the 1930s by forester Ante Premuzic under Habsburg engineering discipline: constant gradient, careful stone work, and unfailing logic in route selection. Almost a century later it is still the most thoughtfully constructed trail in the western Balkans, and it sees a fraction of the foot traffic its quality deserves.

Highlights and Signature Sections
The trail opens in karst meadows before climbing into dense beech and fir forest. The central ridge section between Zavižan (with its historic mountain hut and botanical garden) and Baške Oštarije is the signature stretch — open karst plateau with views into Bosnia on one side and the Adriatic far below on the other. Hajdučki Kukovi rock towers and Rožanski Kukovi (both in the national park) offer optional detours into dramatic dolomite karst spires that rival anything in the Dolomites. Wildlife is exceptional: chamois, griffon vultures, brown bear, and Eurasian lynx all use the Velebit range.
Season Window
Best: May–June and September. Snowmelt clears the path by mid-May most years. July and August bring heat and lightning risk on the exposed ridge. Autumn is excellent: clear skies, fewer hikers, and deer rutting in the forest. Winter crossings require full alpine gear.
Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep
Zavižan mountain hut is the key resupply and sleep point mid-trail. Small staffed huts near the trailheads handle the rest. Water sources are reliable in spring but can be scarce in the karst in late summer — carry 2–3L between huts in July and August. Most hikers cache food at Zavižan for a self-contained 3-day traverse. Resupply towns of Otočac and Gospić are accessible from each end.
Permits and Rules
Northern Velebit National Park requires an entry fee (~€4/day). Wild camping is tolerated in designated areas with leave-no-trace practice but is technically restricted within the national park core zones. Check current regulations with the park administration before planning a camping-only approach.
Gear Watch
Rocky karst terrain means ankle support and grippy soles are essential. Despite moderate trail grades, exposure to ridge weather means a waterproof layer is non-negotiable. In early May carry gaiters for residual snow on north-facing slopes above 1,400 m. Trekking poles help on the karst descents.
Hazards and Cautions
Lightning develops fast over the ridge in summer afternoons — be off the exposed karst plateau by early afternoon in July and August. Brown bear are present but rarely encountered; standard bear-safe food storage applies at any camp. Water sources are reliable spring through June but can dry in karst gullies by late August.
First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy
Start at Stirovaška — this puts the climb behind you early and the best scenery ahead. Zavižan hut on night one, Štirovača or Baške Oštarije on night two. Three days is comfortable; two is achievable with an early start each day. Book Zavižan hut in advance for July and August weekends.

Belize wild camping rules
Belize wild camping is area-specific and generally permission-dependent. Protected forests, coastal/caye zones, and private land require local checks before relying on informal tent overnights.
