Why Hike It
The Müllerthal region in eastern Luxembourg defies expectation. In a country known for finance and EU institutions, a landscape of eroded sandstone towers, mossy grottoes, slot canyons, and tumbling waterfalls has been developing quietly for geologic time. The Müllerthal Trail — 112 km of signposted trail divided into three interlocking circuits — threads through this scenery in a logical and satisfying arc that can be hiked as a loop in 5–7 days. It is modest in total distance but consistently rewarding in terrain quality, and Luxembourg's guesthouse and village infrastructure means no tent is needed. An underrated route that surprises everyone who walks it.

Highlights and Signature Sections
The Gorge du Loup (Wolf's Gorge) is the signature passage — a narrow slot carved through white and buff sandstone that forces single-file walking and natural quiet. The Rocher du Pignon and the Rocher des Sept Heures are viewpoints that look disproportionately dramatic for a country this small. The valley sections through the Ernz Noire river corridor shift character completely, from rocky rambling above to sheltered woodland walking below. The trail also passes through the Larochette and Beaufort castle ruins — a daily pattern of historical discovery mixed with natural terrain.
Season Window
Best: April–June and September–October. Spring brings wildflowers and the forest understory at its greenest; the gorge sections are cool and atmospheric. Autumn colour in the beech canopy is excellent. Summer is warm and can be humid in the enclosed gorge sections. Winter is possible but some guesthouses close.
Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep
The Müllerthal Trail passes through villages and small towns daily. Guesthouses (chambres d’hôtes) and small hotels cater specifically to walkers; the official trail website maintains an accommodation list. Restaurants and shops are available in most overnight towns including Beaufort, Consdorf, and Berdorf. Luxembourg is expensive by European standards — budget accordingly. No camping required.
Permits and Rules
No permit required. The trail crosses a mix of forestry land and private farmland with established right-of-way. Wild camping is not permitted. No national park fee applies.
Gear Watch
The sandstone terrain is slippery when wet — grippy soles are essential in the gorge sections. Trekking poles help on the rocky descents. The trail is never technically demanding but has multiple short steep pitches. A light rain jacket and quick-dry layers are appropriate; the canopy provides some weather shelter but the ridge sections are exposed.
Hazards and Cautions
The gorge sections can flood in heavy rain and are extremely slippery on wet sandstone. In wet conditions some sections are rerouted — check trail status on the official website. Rockfall is theoretically possible in the gorge but the path is well managed. Ticks are active from March to November in the forest floor debris.
First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy
The three official circuits (A, B, C) each average 37–37 km and can be combined into a single through-route itinerary or done as separate base-camp loops. Most hikers combine all three into a six-stage clockwise traverse. The Ełchternach and Beaufort sections are the most visually impressive — plan rest days around these if possible.
