Why Hike It
The Bucegi area delivers a lot of mountain drama in a relatively short distance: cliffs above forest, exposed high plateaus, and a strong mix of cable-car-accessed tourism and quieter backcountry terrain. It suits hikers who want a condensed Romanian mountain route with real elevation change.

Highlights and Signature Sections
The plateau itself is broad and visually unusual compared with sharper ridge systems elsewhere in the Carpathians. Cliff-edge viewpoints above Busteni are dramatic. Rock formations like the Sphinx and Babele add a strange, iconic feel to the high ground.
Season Window
June-September. Snow can linger on steep approaches outside the main season. Summer is the safest full access window, though storms can build quickly.
Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep
Access from Busteni and Sinaia is straightforward by rail from Bucharest. Mountain huts and valley towns make overnight planning easier than on more remote Romanian routes. Water is available in many sections but less reliable on exposed plateau traverses.
Permits and Rules
No general permit required. Weather can justify route changes. Check local mountain rescue advice if storms or lingering snow are expected.
Gear Watch
Pack for wind exposure even in midsummer. Trekking poles and good grip help on steep descents. A warm layer is useful on the plateau when visibility turns.
Hazards and Cautions
Storm exposure is the core risk. Some steep paths can be slick after rain. Tourist concentrations near cable-car areas create a different rhythm from the rest of the route.
First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy
Strong day hikers can use this as a first mountain circuit, but they should treat weather seriously and avoid overcommitting when storms are possible. Splitting the route into shorter days keeps the experience enjoyable and safer. *** Delete File: C:/Users/willi/Documents/adventureplan/content/thru-hikes/bucegi-plateau-circuit-romania.md
