Grasmere to Keswick via High Raise
A two-day walk from Grasmere to Keswick, split by an overnight at Chapel House Farm Campsite. Quick weather changes, a comfortable camp, and two well-timed swims gave the trip a nice rhythm across 34.83 km with 3289.2 m of ascent.
Quick Summary
We broke the crossing into two days, heading out from Grasmere, crossing High Raise, and stopping at Chapel House Farm Campsite before continuing on to Keswick. The overnight stop turned it from one long push into a steadier trip with time to enjoy the better spells when they arrived.
Day 1
We left Grasmere and climbed over High Raise toward Chapel House Farm Campsite. The tops had that familiar Lakeland mix of wet and wind, and it took a bit of patience to keep moving through the rougher patch without letting it set the tone for the whole day.
Later on, the weather shifted properly. Once the sun came through, the day felt completely different, and we made the most of it with a swim before carrying on to camp.
Chapel House Farm Campsite was a good place to split the route. It gave us time to stop, reset, and enjoy the evening rather than treating the whole crossing as a single hard day.
Day 2
The second morning started well. We had slept comfortably on the new air mat, packed up without much fuss, and got moving toward Keswick in good spirits.
Before the sun reached the hills, we had another dip, which was a pretty good way to start the day. After that, it was just a matter of settling into the walk and following the route through to Keswick.

The photos follow the change in mood across the two days: greyer stretches on the way out of Grasmere, the calmer feel around camp, and then the brighter morning as we continued toward Keswick.
Highlights and Learnings
A few things stood out:
- getting through the wet and windy stretch over High Raise and seeing the day improve
- breaking the route with an overnight at Chapel House Farm Campsite
- fitting in a swim once the weather cleared on day one
- waking up well rested after a comfortable night on the new air mat
- starting day two with another early dip before carrying on to Keswick
The main takeaway was how quickly the feel of a trip can change. What started in rough conditions ended up feeling relaxed and enjoyable once the weather eased and camp was sorted.
