Why Hike It

Kjolur is about emptiness, scale, and atmosphere. It is an inland Iceland crossing with a very different personality from the better-known Laugavegur: less concentrated spectacle, more deep highland solitude and long volcanic horizons.

Trail Snapshot

  • Distance: 185 km
  • Typical duration: 10 days
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Route style: Point to point
  • Elevation gain: ~2,200 m
  • Primary accommodation: huts, camping

Highlights and Signature Sections

The route's power comes from vast interior terrain, geothermal features, and the sheer openness of the highlands. It feels more like a remote crossing than a scenic corridor walk.

Season Window

July-August. Access is tightly constrained by snow, river conditions, and road openings. Outside peak summer, the route is generally not practical.

Logistics: Food, Water, and Sleep

This is a self-supported route with limited infrastructure. Highland huts can shape the itinerary, but food and contingency planning need to be deliberate. Weather can easily affect progress.

Permits and Rules

No standard hiking permit is required. Respect highland access rules and any local camping restrictions.

Gear Watch

Full wind and rain protection are essential. Even midsummer conditions can be cold, wet, and exposed. Shelter reliability matters.

Hazards and Cautions

Exposure, remoteness, and rapidly shifting Icelandic weather define the risk. This is not a route to approach casually based on modest elevation numbers.

First-Time Thru-Hiker Strategy

Better as a second or later self-supported route. Hikers new to Iceland usually benefit from starting with a shorter, more supported highland trail. *** Delete File: C:/Users/willi/Documents/adventureplan/content/thru-hikes/kjolur-route-iceland.md
