First Wild Camp and the Long Walk Out, 20–21 June 2025
First Wild Camp and the Long Walk Out, 20–21 June 2025
A simple two-day overnight became Jon's first wild camp, with an easy walk in, a much longer walk out, and a very welcome pizza at the end. Across both days, the route came to 28.09 km with 1693.0 m of ascent.
Quick Summary
This was a straightforward overnight built around Jon's first wild camp: a short approach on 20 June, then a longer walk back out to the bus on 21 June. It felt like a good balance of novelty, steady effort, and the small comforts that stand out more after a night outside.
What We Got Up To
We split the trip across two days. The first day was the walk in to camp, kept short enough that we could arrive with time to get sorted and settle in properly rather than rushing the evening.
That made sense for a first wild camp. The overnight itself was the main point of the trip, so keeping the approach manageable helped the whole thing feel calmer and more enjoyable.
The second day was the bigger effort: the long walk out to the bus. That was where most of the distance and climbing sat, and it turned the trip from a simple overnight into a proper two-day outing. By the end, we were definitely ready for food, and the thought of pizza gave the finish a bit of extra pull.
The photos follow that shift nicely, starting with the quieter walk in and camp atmosphere before moving into the longer journey out the next day.
Conditions and Gear
The notes are fairly light, but the shape of the trip says a lot. Keeping the first day shorter was the right call with overnight kit on our backs. It gave us time to arrive, get organised, and enjoy camp without treating it like a late finish.
The second day was more about pacing. Once we were on the longer walk out, the main job was to keep moving steadily and not waste energy.
Trips like this are a good reminder that simple decisions matter: - keep the first day realistic - carry what you need without overcomplicating it - save enough in the tank for the walk home
Highlights and Learnings
The clear highlight was Jon's first wild camp. That gave the trip its character, and linking it to a longer walk out made it feel more rounded than a quick overnight there and back.
A few things stood out: - A short approach makes a first wild camp feel much more relaxed. - On a two-day trip, the walk out can easily become the main event. - Having an easy food plan for the journey home is always worth it.
