Birks Fell Overnighter in Littondale, 30–31 May 2025
A two-day overnighter in Littondale, with an evening walk into camp and a longer return the next morning. Across both days, the route came to 26.62 km with 639.0 m of ascent.
Quick Summary
We split this trip into two very different halves: a shorter hike in to camp on the first day, then a longer wander back to the car on the second. The first evening ended well with shepherd’s pie and apple crumble, and the next morning gave us time to enjoy spring in Littondale before taking the long way out.
What We Got Up To
Day one was all about getting to the camp spot without rushing. It was a short approach, but it still felt like the start of something bigger once we were properly away from the car and heading into the hills. Reaching camp with enough time to settle in made the evening feel relaxed rather than hurried.
Dinner was a highlight in itself: shepherd’s pie followed by apple crumble. After the walk in, that kind of meal always feels well earned.
The second day was the bigger outing. Rather than heading straight back, we took the long way and turned the return into a proper day on foot. It sounds simple, but that change in mindset made the trip feel more like a small journey than just a camp and walk out. The best part was the morning stretch through Littondale, with that fresh spring feel still hanging over everything.
Conditions and Gear
This was the kind of trip where an overnight setup shaped the pace more than the terrain details. Carrying camp kit naturally kept things steadier on the way in, and having the evening to stop, eat, and reset made the longer second day feel more manageable.
A few things stood out:
- Keeping the first day short worked well.
- A decent camp meal made a real difference to the evening.
- Leaving room for a longer, more exploratory return gave the trip a better rhythm.
Highlights and Learnings
The main highlight was how well the two days complemented each other. The first day had a clear purpose: get in, get camp sorted, and enjoy the evening. The second had more space to look around and enjoy the walk for its own sake.
Another takeaway was that a simple overnighter does not need much extra structure to feel worthwhile. A short approach, a comfortable camp, and a scenic return were enough.
Photos
The photos capture the trip as one continuous outing: the walk in, the camp, and the longer return through Littondale the next morning. Together they tell the story better than either day does on its own.
