First Wild Camp and the Long Walk Out
A simple two-day overnight turned into Jon's first wild camp, with a short walk in, a much longer walk out, and pizza waiting at the end. Across both days, the route came to 28.09 km with 1693.0 m of ascent.
Quick Summary
We split this into two very different days: an easy approach to camp on 20 June, then a bigger day back out to the bus on 21 June. It was a good mix of first-time camp nerves, steady effort, and the small comforts that feel bigger after a night outside.
Day 1
The first day was all about keeping things simple. We only had a short walk in, which meant we could get to camp with enough time to sort ourselves out properly instead of arriving late and doing everything in a rush.
That felt like the right way to do a first wild camp. The overnight was the main point of the trip, so a manageable approach helped the whole evening feel calmer and more enjoyable.
The photos tell the story of the trip well, starting with the quieter feel of the walk in and camp, then shifting into the longer journey back out the next day.

Day 2
The second day was where the trip really turned into a proper outing. Most of the distance and climbing sat on the walk back out to the bus, so the job was mostly to keep a steady pace and not waste energy.
By then, the contrast with the first day was obvious. What started as a simple overnight had a bit more weight to it on the way home, and by the finish we were definitely ready for food. The pizza at the end felt fully earned.
Highlights and Learnings
A few things stood out from this one:
- A short approach is a good way to make a first wild camp feel relaxed.
- Carrying overnight kit feels much more manageable when the first day stays realistic.
- On a two-day trip, the walk out can easily become the main effort.
- Having an easy food plan for the end of the trip is always worth it.
The main highlight was simple: Jon's first wild camp. That gave the trip its character, and the longer second day made it feel more rounded than just a quick overnight.
